Study permit application result

If your application is approved, you will receive a letter from IRCC. “Officially, it’s called the port of entry (POE) letter of introduction. But this letter is sometimes called the:

  • correspondence letter

  • introduction letter

  • introductory letter”

Source: cic.gc.ca

When you receive the letter, you must make sure that all the information is correct. If this is not the case, you must have the information corrected using the IRCC web form.

This letter only states that your application for a study permit in Canada has received initial approval from IRCC. The final decision to issue a study permit and authorize entry into Canada will be made by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) upon your arrival in Canada.

The introduction letter will be valid for a specified period (usually one year). You will have until the expiry date of your letter to get to Canada.

If you are exempt from the visa requirement, an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) number will appear in your introduction letter. If you are not exempt from the visa requirement, you will receive instructions to send your passport to the Canadian visa office serving your home country to have a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) affixed inside.

Please note that your study permit issued upon your arrival in Canada will be printed with the name of the designated learning institution (DLI) indicated on the admission letter used for your study permit application. You will be required to study at the institution listed on your permit.

To find out what your options are in the event of a refusal, see the Rejection letter section.

To understand the reason for refusal, see Understanding the reasons for rejection section.
