Overview of the process

Canada is a federal state composed of several provinces. Québec is one of these provinces, and has jurisdiction over immigration matters.

To study in Québec, you will need to submit an application to both levels of government for legal residence permits:

  • Government of Québec (provincial);

  • Government of Canada (federal).

You must meet the conditions set by these two levels of government for any stay of more than six months. These conditions may vary depending on your situation (single, couple, with children, etc.). If you are doing an internship as part of your studies, special conditions also apply.

To find out what’s involved in each step of the immigration process for studies, see the Details for each step section.

To find out what documents you’ll need to provide for your family members, see the Coming with family section.

To find out what you need to do if you are studying for less than six months, see the Stay of less than six months section.

To find out how to apply for an internship, see the Doing an internship during your studies section.

For more information on how to get started, see the Preparing for the process section.
