What to do if your admission is deferred

If you have to defer your admission, you must first contact your educational institution to find out what procedures to follow. For example, admission to some programs is limited to the fall semester, while others offer admission in two or three semesters.

If you have to postpone your admission, your educational institution will provide you with a new admission letter with the new program start and end dates, if applicable.

Depending on the stage you are at in your application process, here is what you should do:

  • If you have not yet applied for your CAQ, simply do so with your new letter of acceptance.

  • If your CAQ application is being processed and you receive an intention of refusal, respond by attaching your new letter of admission in order to obtain a CAQ that is valid for the entire duration of your program.

  • If your CAQ was obtained with the initial letter of admission but you have not applied for your study permit, you can attach the following items to your study permit application:

    • the CAQ ;

    • the initial letter of admission AND the new letter of admission, accompanied by a paragraph explaining that you had to postpone your admission and that your CAQ remains valid.

  • If you have applied for your study permit and have not yet received a decision, use the IRCC web form to attach your new letter of admission to your application.

  • If you have received your study permit acceptance letter but are outside Canada, it is advisable to delay your arrival and come a few weeks before the actual start of your program;

  • If you have your study permit and are in Canada, make sure you comply with the conditions of your study permit regarding deferred enrollment.
