How to extend your study permit

The application to extend your study permit is made online through your GCKey account. Within this system, it’s considered a new application. By answering the questions on the platform (see PDF below), you can access the IMM5709 form: “Applying to Change Conditions or Extend Your Stay in Canada – Student.”

The platform generates the forms you need to fill in, as well as a checklist indicating which documents you need to include with your application. As with CAQ renewal applications, you’ll need to justify your academic pathway so far and prove your ability to cover the costs associated with your continued stay.

The IRCC guide specifies the documents required and the fees you must pay.

Note that you can apply for or renew a co-op work permit at the same time as you apply for a study permit extension.

If your application is accepted, you will receive a notification in your account that your application has been approved, and your new study permit will be sent to the mailing address you provided.

To find out what to submit in terms of academic documents, see the Study-related documents section.

To find out what you need to provide as proof of financial capacity, see the Proof of financial capacity section.

To find out how to renew your co-op work permit, see the Renewing your co-op work permit section.
