Restoring your student status
If you find yourself without status in Canada, you have 90 days to apply to restore your status.
While your application for restoration of status is being processed, you must remain in Canada, but you cannot work or continue your studies until you obtain a new, valid study permit.
To be eligible for status restoration, you must meet the following conditions:
You must submit your application within 90 days of losing your status;
You must meet the initial requirements of your period of stay;
You must remain in Canada until a decision is made;
You must continue to meet the requirements of your study permit;
You must have lost your status only because:
the authorized period of stay is over (expiry of the study permit);
you are pursuing studies other than those indicated on your study permit, or you have stopped studying.
When you apply, be sure to select the “Restore my status” option in section 3 of the form and add a note explaining why you need to extend your stay. You will also have to pay the restoration fees.
If your status is restored, you’ll receive a study permit specifying the conditions of your stay in Canada. This will be mailed to the address you provide. The new authorized period of stay will also be indicated on your new study permit.
