Maintaining your student status
Maintained status is a federal authorization that allows students to maintain their status after their study permit has expired, provided the application for renewal has been submitted before midnight on the day the permit expires.
The renewal application filing date corresponds to the time when the application has been completed, i.e., once the fees have been paid and all documents have been submitted. For online applications, the system is set according to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
Plan ahead to avoid any last-minute mishaps or technical problems on the platform.
While your application for a study permit extension is being processed, you will retain the same rights and obligations as with your current status.
If you do not complete your extension application on time, you will lose your right to study and work in Canada. You will have to apply for restoration of status and wait for your new permit to regain these rights.
To find out how to restore your status if your study permit has expired, see the Restoring your status section.
